5 question with Korean girl group KARA!

From the butt-shakin' hit 'Mister' to the psychedelic tunes of 'Step', Korean girl group KARA has come a long way to attain their global standing in K-Pop-dom today. One of the most successful Korean imports to Japan, the five-member group (Park Gyuri, Han Seungyeong, Nicole Jung, Goo Hara and Kang Jiyoung) catapulted to instant stardom with their hip-swaying dance moves and mild-mannered ways.

While they have chalked up numerous chart-topping Oricon hits and No.1 bestsellers, before they became a household name in Japan, the group had more lows than highs in the course of their idol careers. They had a lacklustre debut, underwent a reformation with two new members -- when ex-lead singer Kim Sunghee left the group -- and got embroiled in a legal lawsuit over contractual dispute, which was eventually amicably resolved out of court in 2011.

Nervous and excited to be meeting their Singaporeans fans for the first time this July during the launch of their first signature fragrance K5J (Kara 5 Jewel) at their KARA showcase, the members could hardly contain their excitement in an e-mail interview with xinmsn.

Apart from expressing their gratitude towards fans in light of their historical milestone - the launch of their signature fragrance - the girls also spoke of their most memorable fan encounter with a visually handicapped fan during the KARASIA Japan tour.

What kind of fans attracts KARA's attention during their showcase and what should you do to stand out? Read on for more!

xinmsn: How do you cope with your global popularity? Does it surprise you when you travel to a new place and see tons of fans?
KARA: Each member has their own Twitter account. As we check Twitter, numerous fans from different countries cheer us up all the time. We are always surprised by fans who come to the airport and greet us - we feel like we've got the whole world right beside us.

xinmsn: What is one of the most memorable fan encounters you guys had?
KARA: We remember one couple who is around 50 years old, whom we met in Yokohama during the KARASIA Japan tour. This husband took his visually-handicapped wife to attend KARASIA and she said, 'I couldn't see [your concert] but I feel your concert. I felt very happy, thanks for your hard work.' When we read this article the next day, we decided to work even harder for the fans who love us.

xinmsn: If you had more time in Singapore, where would you like to visit?
KARA: We want to travel everywhere in Singapore! We heard the Dolphin Show is very impressive and we especially want to visit Sentosa Island. We heard the water is so clean and beautiful. As a matter of fact, we want to visit everywhere we possibly can visit.

xinmsn: Amongst the five of you, which member takes the longest to get ready?
KARA: As we are always wearing full makeup while we are on stage, we prefer to not wear too much makeup when we are in our casual attire. All of us do not take too much time to prepare before we go out but Ji-young loves to sleep, so sometimes, she comes out just a little later than the other members.

xinmsn: What kind of fans would capture your attention in the audience?
KARA: Fans who are dancing and singing with us while we are on stage!! Come and enjoy with us 200%!

TVXQ, Super Junior, B2ST, 2PM, & more to be featured in ’2012 K-pop Star Entertain Art Show’

Artwork featuring popular K-pop stars will soon become available for the public to see!
Starting June 23rd until August 19th, the Engagement Company, headed by Park Jae Shin, will hold its first art exhibit, titled ’2012 K-pop Star Entertain Art Show’, in the Korean International Exhibition Center (KINTEX) located in Ilsan. The art show will aim to attract both domestic and foreign Hallyu fans with its K-pop inspired paintings.
The artists have attempted to paint realistic, photo-like images of the K-pop stars using the “trompe-l’oeil technique”, a French technique that involves creating an optical illusion so that 2D images appear to be 3D ones. The application of such techniques can be seen in both the 2PM and Son Dam Biexamples provided. The K-pop artists depicted seem to be coming out of the pictures rather than remaining confined within the frames.
There will be three different sections within the art show, including a star zone, a themed zone, and a special zone. The star zone will feature the portraits of 19 artists, including TVXQSuper Junior,Wonder Girlsf(x)KARA, CNBLUE, B2STBaek Ji YoungIm Jae bumYoon Do HyunKim Jang HoonHuh Gak, and more across a total of 110 pieces. The Engagement Company has made sure to gain permission via signed contracts from the entertainment labels to use each celebrity’s image for the art show.
The special zone will feature pop artists like Mary KimCharles JangArtnom, and The Jack, who will be presenting K-pop star related pop art projects through this special showcase.
Representatives of the art show commented, “We will provide a special kind of entertainment bordering between reality and illusion for the Korean fans as well as international fans of Hallyu.”
Tickets to the show can be booked in advance at the Interpark website.
Will any of you be in Korea this summer to enjoy a water fight with 2PM and interact with your favorite stars? Or at least, painted versions of them?

f(x) ‘Electric Shock’

The best thing about f(x) is that they’re SM Entertainment‘s experimental girl group. They’re not the most advertised out of SM’s superstar roster, but when it comes to music and concept art, they unleash an idiosyncratic spin off the sometimes redundant sounds of SM. They proved this time and time again with hip-hop/rave anthem “NU ABO” and quirky-pop jam “Pinocchio“. The unconventional use of heavy trance synths seem to be f(x)’s trademark sound and we hear them once again on their new single, “Electric Shock”, a hook-heavy, diluted-club pop single produced by dutch songwriting team Future Presidents. Unfortunately this time around, “Electric Shock” is their least brave single yet, safely buzzing within the bounds of what’s been already covered by f(x) ground. Luckily for f(x), the animal-headed pop princesses’ best songs aren’t always their promoted singles – which is the best part of being experimented by SM.
As much of a party “Electric Shock” shapes up to be, the lack of innovation here in comparison to f(x)‘s previous releases is a real drawback this time around.  What makes “Electric Shock” “un-special” is the obvious fact that it’s a direct translation of the dusty old demo (formally titled “Electric Lights”) that SM accepted two months ago from Future Presidents. What made “Pinocchio” the exceptional K-Pop song it’s now known for was the strong involvement of a lead Korean producer (Hitchhiker) tailoring a foreign piece to a K-Pop smash hit. Not to say that foreigners are incapable of creating great K-Pop, but having vocal melodies that flow with the natural rhythm of the spoken language is crucial in pop music and an absolute necessity. It’s why an English version of “Gee” would sound awkward and unnatural.
The redeeming factor here though is the crafty, expert songwriting by Seo Ji Eum, taking full advantage of the talk-rapping featured in the verses. As noted by numerous netizens, the first syllable of each line of the verses actually spell out electric shock in Korean.
Producer Hitchhiker does make an appearance on the album on the third track of the album with “Zig Zag“, tying a knot of consistency with f(x)’s previous album with ‘Electric Shock’. It’s not the strongest track on the album, but it’s a solid reminder of the edgy, yet unique delivery f(x) is known for.Hitchhiker is a consistent contributor to SM artists such as BoA, but most recognized for his audacious productions with Brown Eyed Girls. While producers such as Sweetune and Brave Brothers tend to blur lines of distinction between the material they create for their clients, Hitchhiker almost always focuses their songs to the respective artist, making them one of the best assets for an f(x) album.
Aside from the Kenzie produced “Jet” sealing the SM brand on this album, the remainder of the mini-album focuses on foreign productions and more practical pop leanings, but stays true to f(x)’s creative sound. “Love Hate” is an emotionally erratic frenzy that has the girls fired up exclaiming, “I love you! I hate you! I can’t make up mind!”, which is exactly how I felt about the song when I first heard it. But much like most of f(x)’s music, it only takes a few listens until the song really latches on to your brain.
Nestled smack down in the middle of the tracklist of f(x) weirdness is “Beautiful Stranger“, which is probably the least weird song that they’ve ever done, but it’s also one of their most memorable. “Beautiful Stranger” is a track featuring the three strongest performers of the group in a merciless urban pop track. Reeling in influence from B.o.B.’s “Airplanes” and Katy Perry‘s “E.T.”, “Beautiful Stranger” reflects some of that western flavor the Asian American members, Amber and Krystal, subtly enrich the group with on a magnified scale. Furthermore, it allows these members, along with Luna, to reveal their talents often hidden by their overly commercialized singles.
f(x) is widely seen as SM’s most underrated group, but with “Electric Shock” mesmerizing audiences across the net, that seems to be the least of the group’s worries. In actuality, the criticism that they haven’t created anything new this time around is also a positive sign for the group. It basically says that f(x) settled for a sound that works for them and are performing well. If you ask me, I’m not at all worried for f(x) ever becoming stale because it’s clear f(x) was designed to be this K-Pop artifice group rather than SM’s breadwinner.
