SISTAR's "Give It To Me" - Up close and personal

Now that SISTAR is back on the K-pop radar with their sultry "Give It To Me" MVand second album, it's finally starting to feel more like summer.

From the looks (and sounds) of their title track, "Give It To Me," it's no surprise that its climbing its way up the music charts.

The accompanying MV is, in a lot of ways, quite reminiscent of SISTAR's prior MVs. For one thing, "Give It To Me" doesn't shy away from the glamour of "Alone"or the flirty vibe of "So Cool."

But that's not saying that "Give It To Me" isn't memorable in its own way. That's hardly the case, given how the MV is as aesthetically engaging as it is well-made.

And so, we gladly welcome the lovely ladies of SISTAR back to the K-Pop scene with the traditional rite of passage - more specifically, the MV recaps. Or, if you really want to be blunt, what can be translated as the most unflattering shots from their MV laid out for our hedonistic viewing pleasure.

But first, can we just take a minute to gape at how amazing these girls look?Hyorin, for instance, can pull off the sultry, soulful stare like nobody else.

I can't be the only one who's loving Soyu's new hair. Nothing says "I mean business" quite as forcefully as having red hair.

And Dasom's scenes from the MV are fairly captivating.

As for Bora, this girl looks good doing anything, anywhere. She can be wearing a potato sack, picking up garbage on the side of the highway with a stick for community service hours and she'll still look pretty.

Now with that out of the way, let's begin.

Somebody overdosed on the tanning.

*Fierce girl snapping*

Guy: "... Oomph. She would weigh nothing, they told me."

Dasom: "Well, this is awkward."

Hyorin: "I just gotta look like I got punched in the stomach."
And as for Soyu, does she not look like she's waterbending, or airbending? Or modeling her pits?

Can we just take a moment and look at the girl on the front left? She looks like those false lashes are really bugging her.

Please suspicious sir, let me help you cross the street.

So that's what Hyorin's forehead looks like.

Soyu, are you ok?

"Follow me, children! I have candy!"

"All my feels!"

Omg. He looks like he would be such an embarrassing dad.

[Album Review] Henry Lau 'Trap'

Most young male soloists in K-Pop these days lean on a sexy image (Rain when he was active, Jay Park2PM's WooyoungJYJ's JunsuRoh Ji Hoon) or an artistic image (JYJ's JaejoongINFINITE's SunggyuBig Bang's G-Dragon). Looking at the K-Pop landscape, one has to wonder ... where's K-Pop's Justin Bieber?

Before you freak out and exile me from the K-Pop fandom for daring to mention He Who Must Not Be Named (I'm a bit amused at the amount of hate some K-Pop fans have for Justin Bieber), hear me out. There's a reason Justin Bieber completely took over when he showed up with "Baby" in 2010, and that reason was that he was the perfect teen heartthrob. He had the same kind of wholesome, boy-next-door charm of the Jonas Brothers, but since he got his big break by uploading covers on YouTube instead of by appearing on the Disney Channel, he seemed even more down-home and accessible than his contemporaries. He was a singing, dancing, instrument-playing, baby-faced triple-threat, and his songs and image were innocent enough that parents didn't mind their thirteen-year-olds listening to him.

Henry's solo debut album, 'Trap', falls right in line with that kind of image- the whole album is straightforward, easy to follow and has this general niceness to it that doesn't feel overly processed or like it's trying too hard. It's a breath of fresh air in the midst of all the weighty, conceptual music SM Entertainment's been turning out this year. Henry's not being a zombie or a wolf or anything but the singing, dancing, instrument-playing, baby-faced triple-threat that he is, and that's exactly what his fans want from him.

The lead single "Trap" opens with a clangy piano intro and some falsetto oohs and ahhs reminicent of a slowed-down take on SISTAR's "Alone" while covering similar lyrical territory about the loneliness of being hung up on an ex who's moved on. Aside from being obviously slower than "Alone", "Trap" differs from SISTAR's song in the way it portrays the singer's feelings. the emotional draw of "Alone" is in how much it withholds from the audience- SISTAR are cold and aloof and they draw you in by making you feel like there's more to the story that they just aren't telling. "Trap" takes an entirely different approach, wearing its heart on its sleeve and earning your attention with its honesty. It's the kind of song we've all heard before, but it's still engaging enough to be interesting. The cameos from Taemin andKyuhyun are musically unnecessary, but from a marketing standpoint it makes sense that SM would put two of their biggest stars on Henry's debut single.

The middle of the album will be particularly special to Henry's fans as Henry and his production group,Noize Bank, wrote, composed, and produced "1-4-3", "My Everything", and "Ready 2 Love". "1-4-3" and "Ready 2 Love" fit with the bright euro-dance style that Noise Bank showed us through their work on Super Junior-M's "Go" and "It's You", while "My Everything" turns the tables as a mostly acoustic, One Direction-y midtempo ballad. All three are ridiculously sweet love songs that might be a little too cute for some listeners, but they work with the boy-next-door image that Henry's going for with this album. The fact that Henry himself had a hand in creating these songs takes a bit of the saccharine edge off, just because his delivery feels so genuine.

"Holiday" is a Jonas Brothers-esque song about needing a break from a stressful relationship or from the stress of dealing with school and exams- a perfect song for this time of year! It rounds things out by being the only non-love song on the album. Piano ballad "I Would", with Andrew Choi on board as co-lyricist andYiruma as the co-composer and featured pianist, wraps things up nicely. It makes a nice surprise for Henry's English-speaking fans (who make up a very significant chunk of his fanbase), as the song is sung entirely in English.

'Trap's biggest setback is that it is almost too nice. It's so sweet and normal and inoffensive that it's almost forgettable. There's nothing wrong with conventional, mainstream pop, but throwing in something a little unexpected- like, for example, something like what B1A4 did with the dark prechorus in their otherwise bright-sounding "What's Going On?"- would have given the album a little more contrast and made things that much more interesting. That said, the album is still enjoyable and it shows that he knows exactly what kind of artist he wants to be- not a bad way to kick off a solo career.

SHINee To Release New Album Again?

Idol group SHINee is planning to release their 5th mini album this year.

SHINee released two new albums not too long ago but it seems they will not be able get off on stage as they are said to release a new album in the later half of the year.

A news report about TVXQ's Japanese tour was released on the 12th of June and it contained some information about other SM artists. SHINee was included in the article as they are said to be promoting again in Korea. To be sure, a Korean fan contacted the SM itself to confirm the news to which SM revealed that it is one of their plans this year.

Are you excited to know the next concept of SHINee?

SM Entertainment's plans for 2nd half of 2013, f(x) to comeback soon?

SM Entertainment hasn't been fazed at all when their quarterly earnings fell short of last year's, because they have a lot to look forward to.

Back then, the label had said, "There are various big concerts that will be factored in the 2nd quarter, such as Girls' Generation's Japanese tour, TVXQ's Japanese Dome tour, and SM Town Live. EXO is also going to start promoting actively in Korea and China. The artists' various promotions will spring on a new momentum."

But it looks like concerts won't be the end of it! An analyst from Korea Investment Holdings hinted at some of SM Entertainment's plans for the 2nd half of 2013. He stated, "f(x) is going to release their full album in June or July. SHINee is also planning a mini album scheduled to be released in the second half of the year. There's also a possibility that a new artist will debut in the second half of the year as well."

This along with the rumors of a potential TaeTiSeo comeback should excite SM Entertainment fans for the rest of 2013!
