2NE1's Interview With Oricon Japan, Part 1

ー On March 28th, “SCREAM” and “COLLECTION” albums were released simultaneously.
DARA: “SCREAM” is a new song that we recorded specially for the Japanese fans. It has an addictive melody and the way the sound changes in the different parts are interesting; people will enjoy as they listen to it.
MINZY: It’s also a song that will lift up your mood when you listen to it, it’s music that’s easy to sing along to. While you are walking and you’re listening to this song continuously, you’ll find yourself singing to it and smiling. Ha ha!

ー Ah, I know that feeling well. There’s music that connects 2 people, the music which itself has power, which increases little by little as time goes by.
BOM: And this song is really good, MINZY has a very sharp edge during the rap parts and she sounds really cool! Also when I recorded my parts for this song, I put more power into my voice, as I wanted to have a distinct color. Frankly, when I first heard “SCREAM” it was a bit difficult for me initially, since I couldn’t understand it much (bitter smile).. But like they said, the melody really made me want to sing along as I listened to it more; then when CL and DARA added their unique charms during their parts, it became even more of a song that I like to listen to again and again.

ー Also, the lyrics has the charm of a club scene, where there’s a man who’s a player, going around, and then there’s this decision being made that “If you’re not going to change your attitude, then BYE!” At first glance, this shows a strong woman who has her mind set and who has a determined attitude, but at the same time, a woman’s fragile state is also portrayed.
CL: Verbal of M-Flo wrote the lyrics. It was a great opportunity to work with VERBAL; it was something fresh and exciting while working with him and his team during the planning stage.

ー For the album “COLLECTION” several exciting songs were recorded into it. For a first album release in Japan, there’s the new Japanese song, plus several hit Korean songs that were recorded in Japanese!
CL: It’s our first full album in Japan, and we wanted wanted to introduce the group 2NE1 to the everyone in Japan, to introduce the sense of who we are, so we included our Korean songs and translated them into Japanese.
DARA: 2NE1 has many different styles and different colors, so once people listen to this album, people would immediately think and know that this is 2NE1. When people can say that “This is 2NE1″ definitely, once they hear a song or see a member, then we’ve completed our mission!
BOM: 2NE1 isn’t all about our new styles or our new look, there’s our music. Our songs are ones that once you listen to them, they become familiar, and people can enjoy them more and more as they listen to them.
CL: Among all our songs, I think “FIRE,” which is our debut song in Korea, is still 2NE1′s trademark. Like when you think of 2NE1, there’s no way you won’t be able to think of that song. So when we did this album, when it was time for us to decide on what we wanted to put as the first song, all four of us decided that it would be this song. It’s to represent a new start for 2NE1, and will also give a big impact the moment that you listen to the album.
DARA: When we were doing this album, we newly recorded the songs in Japanese. When we did “FIRE,” all my feelings and memories of excitement and nervousness during the time we debuted, came rushing up. It was a very deep and strong feeling.
MINZY: Our intention is to bring the original songs to life in Japanese. However, because “FIRE” is completely incorporated into my mind in Korean for a long time, there was a difficult feeling of transition when we were recording it with Japanese lyrics. Though I understood the lyrics, it still had a different feel, so it took quite some time to record it. On the other hand, “SCREAM” is a totally new song, it had a completely blank slate right from the start, so recording that song was the best and it went by easier.
BOM: “I DON’T CARE” is also our debut song, and it also makes people associate the song with us when they listen to it. When I went to America, someone recommended the song to me and said, “Listen to to this song, “I DON’T CARE,” it’s really good and it’s sung by a group from South Korea,” and made me listen to it. Ha ha!

ー You were approached and they promoted it Ha ha
BOM: I was thinking that hey, I’m one of those people who sang that song… Ha ha! But it was really impressive, and I was really proud of 2NE1.

ー 2NE1 has really proven that music transcends borders…
BOM: That’s why 2NE1 will work harder and will endeavor to be at the top of the world!
ー 2NE1 is already the best group I think.
BOM: No, we’re still not the best yet (grins)

ー Your humble attitude and hard work have made people curious, and they would want to know more about 2NE1 and the group’s charm has steadily increased.

CL: It’s also because the members care and respect each other.
