SBS’s “2010 Gayo Daejun” had internal problems despite impressive visuals

Artists stayed in waiting rooms made out of tents behind the stage

Despite the impressive exterior appearance of SBS’s “2010 Gayo Daejun,” internal problems left the show with much to be desired.

The three hour long ceremony was held on December 29th at Ilsan KINTEX and it featured an amazing line-up of the top K-pop artists and performances.

Unfortunately, what hid behind the glitz and the glam was a poorly conceived production.

The concert hall itself was the first problem, as the KINTEX is not an official concert hall. The weather was at a freezing -10 degrees, and the backstage failed to setup a proper heating system. Artists that arrived as early as 8 AM for rehearsals were forced to fight with the blistering cold all day long.

The waiting rooms were also set up behind a tent, but not enough rooms were available to all of the artists, leading them to take rooms at a motel nearby for their hair and makeup.

Some, unable to bear the cold, were often seen waiting in their cars for long periods, while others left completely to wait in their homes until the concert started. At around 5 PM, the lights went out in three waiting rooms, forcing the artists that were using them to leave the stadium and wait elsewhere.

The concert was ill-prepared to house Korea’s top stars, as revealed by an industry representative, “Every year, such situations are repeated. There is nothing that improves each year. A lot of the artists suffered that day because of the cold.”

The event was also plagued by microphone issues throughout the broadcast.
